Volunteer Doctor

Four times a year since the TSC Fairfax clinic began in 1993, director Dr. William McClintock has volunteered his Saturdays to see patients often staying until the last family has gone home.

The experienced neurologist, who has seen fifty TS patients in the last decade, was first contacted by Nancy Elling who wanted to imitate the Chicago TSC clinic, so people can receive the kind of assistance and security that she did shortly after her son Frankie was diagnosed with TS. Dr. McClintock and Dr. David Daigh, another clinic neurologist, were obvious candidates to approach with her idea because they were doing such a good job with Frankie.

Since then, this mild-mannered doctor has recruited many other physicians including fellow neurologists, a neurosurgeon, a geneticist, and a dermatologist. On clinic days, this member of NTSA's Professional Advisory Board is seen earnestly discussing various treatment methods or interesting cases with his colleagues. "There are a number of physicians that have come by, and I like getting to know them," he says. It's well worth his time and effort when he gets to know difficult problems and is able to help the families.

While Dr. McClintock feels that his understanding of the variety of TS cases has increased, his one regret about the clinic is that they don't have the facilities needed for storing files and creating a database. Still, he holds ambitious plans for the future. "We want to begin research [on topics such as] sleep problems and behavioral problems now that we have a clinic base. It's been delayed because we needed to grow the clinic," he relates.

When he is not volunteering for NTSA or working, he likes to fly fish and toy around with his computer. His four boys keep him active in sports as well.
